CWE-942

Permissive Cross-domain Security Policy with Untrusted Domains

VariantIncompleteSimple78 CVEs
The product uses a web-client protection mechanism such as a Content Security Policy (CSP) or cross-domain policy file, but the policy includes untrusted domains with which the web client is allowed to communicate.

Extended description

If a cross-domain policy file includes domains that should not be trusted, such as when using wildcards under a high-level domain, then the application could be attacked by these untrusted domains. In many cases, the attack can be launched without the victim even being aware of it.

Common consequences1

  • ConfidentialityIntegrityAvailabilityAccess ControlExecute Unauthorized Code or CommandsBypass Protection MechanismRead Application DataVaries by Context

With an overly permissive policy file, an attacker may be able to bypass the web browser's same-origin policy and conduct many of the same attacks seen in Cross-Site Scripting (CWE-79). An attacker can exploit the weakness to transfer private information from the victim's machine to the attacker, manipulate or steal cookies that may include session information, create malicious requests to a web site on behalf of the victim, or execute malicious code on the end user systems. Other damaging attacks include the disclosure of end user files, installation of Trojan horse programs, redirecting the user to some other page or site, running ActiveX controls (under Microsoft Internet Explorer) from sites that a user perceives as trustworthy, and modifying presentation of content.

Potential mitigations3

  1. Architecture and DesignOperation

Define a restrictive Content Security Policy [REF-1486] or cross-domain policy file.

  2. Architecture and DesignOperation

Avoid using wildcards in the CSP / cross-domain policy file. Any domain matching the wildcard expression will be implicitly trusted, and can perform two-way interaction with the target server.

  3. Architecture and DesignOperation

For Flash, modify crossdomain.xml to use meta-policy options such as 'master-only' or 'none' to reduce the possibility of an attacker planting extraneous cross-domain policy files on a server.

Windows ML CLI is a command line tool for building portable, performant, and high-quality AI models for Windows ML. Prior to 0.4.0, the src/winml/modelkit/serve/cli_api.py component exposes WinML CLI commands through a localhost HTTP API without authentication and configures the allow_origins setting as a wildcard in both src/winml/modelkit/serve/cli_api.py and src/winml/modelkit/serve/app.py. A malicious website loaded by a user can send cross-origin requests to /v1/cli/build or /v1/cli/config and set the trust_remote_code parameter to true, which is converted to the --trust-remote-code command-line flag without validation. This reaches AutoConfig.from_pretrained with trust_remote_code=True in src/winml/modelkit/loader/_autoconfig.py and imports Python code from an attacker-controlled model repository, resulting in arbitrary code execution as the server user. This issue is fixed in version 0.4.0.

CVE-2020-36851

Rob--W cors-anywhere instances configured as an open proxy allow unauthenticated external users to induce the server to make HTTP requests to arbitrary targets (SSRF). Because the proxy forwards requests and headers, an attacker can reach internal-only endpoints and link-local metadata services, retrieve instance role credentials or other sensitive metadata, and interact with internal APIs and services that are not intended to be internet-facing. The vulnerability is exploitable by sending crafted requests to the proxy with the target resource encoded in the URL; many cors-anywhere deployments forward arbitrary methods and headers (including PUT), which can permit exploitation of IMDSv2 workflows as well as access to internal management APIs. Successful exploitation can result in theft of cloud credentials, unauthorized access to internal services, remote code execution or privilege escalation (depending on reachable backends), data exfiltration, and full compromise of cloud resources. Mitigation includes: restricting the proxy to trusted origins or authentication, whitelisting allowed target hosts, preventing access to link-local and internal IP ranges, removing support for unsafe HTTP methods/headers, enabling cloud provider mitigations, and deploying network-level protections.

CVE-2024-25124

Fiber is a web framework written in go. Prior to version 2.52.1, the CORS middleware allows for insecure configurations that could potentially expose the application to multiple CORS-related vulnerabilities. Specifically, it allows setting the Access-Control-Allow-Origin header to a wildcard (`*`) while also having the Access-Control-Allow-Credentials set to true, which goes against recommended security best practices. The impact of this misconfiguration is high as it can lead to unauthorized access to sensitive user data and expose the system to various types of attacks listed in the PortSwigger article linked in the references. Version 2.52.1 contains a patch for this issue. As a workaround, users may manually validate the CORS configurations in their implementation to ensure that they do not allow a wildcard origin when credentials are enabled. The browser fetch api, as well as browsers and utilities that enforce CORS policies, are not affected by this.

The open-vsx.org deployment returned Access-Control-Allow-Origin reflecting the requesting origin together with Access-Control-Allow-Credentials: true on the authenticated /user/ endpoints. A page on any origin could therefore issue credentialed requests to the service in a logged-in user's browser and read the responses. This exposed /user (login name, avatar, homepage, tokens URL), /user/tokens, /user/namespaces, /user/extensions, /user/search/{name} and /user/namespace/{name}/members, and — because /user/csrf was readable the same way — allowed the CSRF protection on write endpoints to be defeated. Chaining the two, an attacker page could call /user/token/create and exfiltrate a personal access token carrying publish and delete rights over the victim's namespaces. The headers were emitted by the CDN/edge layer, not by the application: the Open VSX software sets allowCredentials(true) in exactly one place, against a single exact origin derived from ovsx.webui.url, and defines no CORS mapping on /user/ beyond it. No configuration of the software produces origin reflection with credentials.

CVE-2026-84176

Permissive Cross-domain Policy with Untrusted Domains vulnerability in Apache Camel Platform HTTP Vertx component. This issue affects Apache Camel: from 4.0.0 before 4.18.5, from 4.19.0 before 4.22.1. createCorsHandler() set Access-Control-Allow-Credentials: true outside the origin check, so the header went out on every response to a request carrying an Origin header, including responses to origins the handler had just decided not to allow. When camel.server.cors.origins is unset, the handler treats every origin as allowed and echoes the caller's own Origin back as Access-Control-Allow-Origin. Together those produce the credentialed any-origin configuration that the fetch specification refuses to express as a literal wildcard, which is precisely why reflecting the origin is the usual way around that rule. A page on any origin could therefore make credentialed cross-origin requests to the Camel endpoint and read the responses. Upgrade to Apache Camel 4.23.0, which fixes the issue. Users on the 4.18.x LTS releases stream should upgrade to 4.18.5. Users on the 4.22.x LTS releases stream should upgrade to 4.22.1. Access-Control-Allow-Credentials is now sent only when the request origin matched an origin the operator actually configured. With no origin list the origin is still reflected, as before, but credentials are not granted, and Vary: Origin is now set whenever the origin is reflected so that a shared cache cannot serve one origin's response to another. For deployments that cannot upgrade immediately, set camel.server.cors.origins to the explicit list of origins that need access rather than leaving it unset.

This allows a malicious website to read sensitive system information from a running Glances instance in the victim’s browser, leading to cross-origin data exfiltration. While a previous advisory exists for XML-RPC CORS issues, this report demonstrates that the REST API (`/api/4/*`) is also affected and exposes significantly more sensitive data. Version 4.5.4 patches the issue.

Sliver is a command and control framework that uses a custom Wireguard netstack. Prior to version 1.7.4, a single click on a malicious link gives an unauthenticated attacker immediate, silent control over every active C2 session or beacon, capable of exfiltrating all collected target data (e.g. SSH keys, ntds.dit) or destroying the entire compromised infrastructure, entirely through the operator's own browser. This issue has been patched in version 1.7.4.

CVE-2025-55462

A CORS misconfiguration in Eramba Community and Enterprise Editions v3.26.0 allows an attacker-controlled Origin header to be reflected in the Access-Control-Allow-Origin response along with Access-Control-Allow-Credentials: true. This permits malicious third-party websites to perform authenticated cross-origin requests against the Eramba API, including endpoints like /system-api/login and /system-api/user/me. The response includes sensitive user session data (ID, name, email, access groups), which is accessible to the attacker's JavaScript. This flaw enables full session hijack and data exfiltration without user interaction. Eramba versions 3.23.3 and earlier were tested and appear unaffected. The vulnerability is present in default installations, requiring no custom configuration.

CVE-2026-46608

Glances is an open-source system cross-platform monitoring tool. Prior to 4.5.5, the Glances XML-RPC server (glances -s) introduced a configurable CORS origin list in version 4.5.3 as a mitigation for CVE-2026-33533. However, the implementation silently falls back to Access-Control-Allow-Origin: * whenever cors_origins contains more than one entry. An operator who configures an explicit two-entry allowlist (e.g. two internal dashboard origins) intending to restrict browser access instead receives the unrestricted wildcard. A malicious web page served from any origin can issue a CORS simple request to /RPC2 and read the full system monitoring dataset without the victim's knowledge. This vulnerability is fixed in 4.5.5.

mcp-memory-service is an open-source memory backend for multi-agent systems. Prior to version 10.25.1, when the HTTP server is enabled (MCP_HTTP_ENABLED=true), the application configures FastAPI's CORSMiddleware with allow_origins=['*'], allow_credentials=True, allow_methods=["*"], and allow_headers=["*"]. The wildcard Access-Control-Allow-Origin: * header permits any website to read API responses cross-origin. When combined with anonymous access (MCP_ALLOW_ANONYMOUS_ACCESS=true) - the simplest way to get the HTTP dashboard working without OAuth - no credentials are needed, so any malicious website can silently read, modify, and delete all stored memories. CVE-2026-107858

Missing Origin Validation in WebSockets (CWE-1385) and Permissive Cross-domain Policy with Untrusted Domains (CWE-942) in the development web server (ADK Web) in Google Agent Development Kit (ADK) for Java (com.google.adk:google-adk-dev versions 0.1.0 before 1.13.0 and com.google.adk:google-adk-maven-plugin versions 0.3.0 before 1.13.0) allow a remote attacker to control a locally running agent and read its data via a malicious web page visited by a developer while the server is running. The /run_live WebSocket endpoint accepts connections from any origin by default (hardcoded via setAllowedOrigins("*") in versions 0.1.0 through 1.5.0, and defaulting to * via adk.web.cors.origins in versions 1.6.0 through 1.12.0), and since version 0.4.0 the REST API returns Access-Control-Allow-Origin: * by default. Because the server has no authentication and requests originate from the developer's browser (so binding to localhost does not prevent exploitation), a cross-origin page can send messages to the agent (triggering registered tools), stream agent responses, and list, read, create, or delete sessions and artifacts. In versions 1.6.0 through 1.12.0, users can mitigate the issue by setting the adk.web.cors.origins property to an explicit allowlist of trusted origins (such as http://localhost:8000). The vulnerability is fixed in version 1.13.0, which enforces a same-origin default for CORS and the /run_live WebSocket endpoint, and rejects DNS-rebinding requests over loopback.

Glances is an open-source system cross-platform monitoring tool. Prior to version 4.5.2, the Glances REST API web server ships with a default CORS configuration that sets `allow_origins=["*"]` combined with `allow_credentials=True`. When both of these options are enabled together, Starlette's `CORSMiddleware` reflects the requesting `Origin` header value in the `Access-Control-Allow-Origin` response header instead of returning the literal `*` wildcard. This effectively grants any website the ability to make credentialed cross-origin API requests to the Glances server, enabling cross-site data theft of system monitoring information, configuration secrets, and command line arguments from any user who has an active browser session with a Glances instance.
