CWE-473

PHP External Variable Modification

VariantDraftSimple5 CVEs
A PHP application does not properly protect against the modification of variables from external sources, such as query parameters or cookies. This can expose the application to numerous weaknesses that would not exist otherwise.

Common consequences1

  • IntegrityModify Application Data

Potential mitigations1

  1. RequirementsImplementation

Carefully identify which variables can be controlled or influenced by an external user, and consider adopting a naming convention to emphasize when externally modifiable variables are being used. An application should be reluctant to trust variables that have been initialized outside of its trust boundary. Ensure adequate checking is performed when relying on input from outside a trust boundary. Do not allow your application to run with register_globals enabled. If you implement a register_globals emulator, be extremely careful of variable extraction, dynamic evaluation, and similar issues, since weaknesses in your emulation could allow external variable modification to take place even without register_globals.

CVE-2023-36845

A PHP External Variable Modification vulnerability in J-Web of Juniper Networks Junos OS on EX Series and SRX Series allows an unauthenticated, network-based attacker to remotely execute code. Using a crafted request which sets the variable PHPRC an attacker is able to modify the PHP execution environment allowing the injection und execution of code. This issue affects Juniper Networks Junos OS on EX Series and SRX Series: * All versions prior to 20.4R3-S9; * 21.1 versions 21.1R1 and later; * 21.2 versions prior to 21.2R3-S7; * 21.3 versions prior to 21.3R3-S5; * 21.4 versions prior to 21.4R3-S5; * 22.1 versions prior to 22.1R3-S4; * 22.2 versions prior to 22.2R3-S2; * 22.3 versions prior to 22.3R2-S2, 22.3R3-S1; * 22.4 versions prior to 22.4R2-S1, 22.4R3; * 23.2 versions prior to 23.2R1-S1, 23.2R2.

CVE-2023-36844

A PHP External Variable Modification vulnerability in J-Web of Juniper Networks Junos OS on EX Series allows an unauthenticated, network-based attacker to control certain, important environment variables. Using a crafted request an attacker is able to modify certain PHP environment variables leading to partial loss of integrity, which may allow chaining to other vulnerabilities. This issue affects Juniper Networks Junos OS on EX Series: * All versions prior to 20.4R3-S9; * 21.1 versions 21.1R1 and later; * 21.2 versions prior to 21.2R3-S7; * 21.3 versions prior to 21.3R3-S5; * 21.4 versions prior to 21.4R3-S5; * 22.1 versions prior to 22.1R3-S4; * 22.2 versions prior to 22.2R3-S2; * 22.3 versions prior to 22.3R3-S1; * 22.4 versions prior to 22.4R2-S2, 22.4R3; * 23.2 versions prior to 23.2R1-S1, 23.2R2.

CVE-2026-28411

WeGIA is a web manager for charitable institutions. Prior to version 3.6.5, an unsafe use of the `extract()` function on the `$_REQUEST` superglobal allows an unauthenticated attacker to overwrite local variables in multiple PHP scripts. This vulnerability can be leveraged to completely bypass authentication checks, allowing unauthorized access to administrative and protected areas of the WeGIA application. Version 3.6.5 fixes the issue.

CVE-2026-40285

WeGIA is a web manager for charitable institutions. Versions prior to 3.6.10 contain a SQL injection vulnerability in dao/memorando/UsuarioDAO.php. The cpf_usuario POST parameter overwrites the session-stored user identity via extract($_REQUEST) in DespachoControle::verificarDespacho(), and the attacker-controlled value is then interpolated directly into a raw SQL query, allowing any authenticated user to query the database under an arbitrary identity. Version 3.6.10 fixes the issue.
